Letters From a Cleveland Fan: An Open Letter to Josh Cribbs

Dear Josh,

Wow… I can’t believe you’re actually leaving us. It’s been 8 years since you first entered our lives as an undrafted free agent out of Kent State and in that time you have truly become one of us. Crazy how time flies. I only wish we could have won a few more games and had more fun along the way.

While I realize your departure isn’t necessarily thanks to your own doing, that doesn’t make this any easier on us as Browns fans. It’s not often that we see an athlete endear himself to a city and fan base quite like you have with us. It’s also rare for us to have a player who so adamantly wants to be here and is as sad as we are to see him go. We’re used to getting spurrend and catching the raw end of the deal when it comes to situations like that. This is all so new and I’m not sure that any of us like it any better than the alternative. This sucks.

So while it seems like an absolute certainty that you’re about to call another NFL city home in 2013, just remember that you will ALWAYS be a Brown. You’re pride in wearing the orange and brown is something we haven’t seen since the mid-80’s. To watch that passion be allowed to walk away sucks but we understand that this is a business first and foremost and in business tough decisions have to be made. And when you are done playing, hopefully after a few more very productive years, we all expect you to take up the torch of promoting the Browns in the same way as some of the greats that came before you. We need you to help carry on that legacy because if not you… then who? You are the heart and soul of the 2000-era Browns and without you there will be a massive void in this team’s legacy moving forward.

So Josh, on behalf of Browns fans everywhere, I would like to wish you the best of luck moving forward with whatever team you end up signing with and I can only hope they better utilize your talents better than the Browns ever did. You are one of the best and most important players in the history of the Cleveland Browns organization and you will be missed. When the time is right and your playing days are finally over, feel free to come home to Cleveland. It’s where you belong.

Thanks for everything you’ve done both on and off the field and always giving 110%.

Sincerely,

Cleveland fan…

and more Browns fans than you can begin to imagine.

  1. “…on behalf of Browns fans everywhere, I would like to wish you the best of luck moving forward with whatever team you end up signing with and I can only hope they better utilize your talents than the Browns ever did.”

The said part is that Browns fans could make a list of guys besides Cribbs that this could be said of…

  2. Josh Cribbs is the Record Holder at #1 for the most kickoffs returned for touchdowns in the history of the NFL. He and the Browns were screwed when they changed the rules in the name of safety. The rule change made Josh much less effective on returns although the Browns were still #8 in the league in combined returns.
Denard Robinson (QB Michigan) is a great choice to replace Josh ( T Benjimin is too fragile). We will miss Josh Cribbs though. There is no doubt about that!
