NFL Divisional Round Preview

Wednesday I posted pictures of players who will probably be heavily involved in this weekends NFL Playoff games.  I’m hoping most of you were able to figure out that the players selected were in actuality my picks for this weekends games.  Since not much else has happened over the past 48 hours and it’s late in the day I’m going to just go ahead and quickly explain my picks.

Saints vs. 49ers

This just in, the Saints are really, really good.  Lucky for me, living in New Orleans the past three NFL seasons has allowed me to experience complete polar opposites when it comes to NFL fandom.  I get to watch the Browns and be pissed off on a weekly basis and then turn right around, watch the Saints, and root for a team that is actually good at football.  It’s amazing.  I can’t wait for the day the Browns are finally good again based off of what I’ve experienced in New Orleans… Anyways, the 49ers are a really good football team as well and have one of, if not the best defense in the NFL.  It’ll be a test for the Saints, but there hasn’t been a defense all year that has been able to completely shut down Drew Brees.  I don’t think it happens this week either.  The Saints will score too many points and 49ers QB Alex Smith won’t be able to do enough to bring them back from behind.  Plus, he’s Alex Smith.  He hasn’t had a lousy game all year.  He’s due.  My pick: Saints 31 – 49ers 14.

Broncos vs. Patriots

I like Tim Tebow.  There, I admit it.  I hated him at Florida, but what he’s done In Denver is remarkable.  It transcends anything we’ve ever really seen in sports, at least in a very long time.  That being said, it’s hard to ignore the fact that the Patriots thoroughly manhandled the Broncos a few weeks ago AND this is a Patriots team looking to get back to being successful in the playoffs.  While I think Denver has a chance if they can keep this close thanks to divine intervention and the mystaical powers of Tebow, I just don’t see them being able to keep up with the Patriots unless literally everything goes right for them in every area of the game.  Also, I’m sure Bill Belichick has a few tricks up his sleeve for Tebow.  My Pick: Patriots 38 – Broncos 10

Texans vs. Ravens

Two words… TJ Yates.  While he hasn’t been awful, he hasn’t been great.  Against the Ravens defense, in Baltimore… you need great if you want to win.  That is unless the Ravens don’t show up to play, but given their track record in the playoffs that seems unlikely.  Then again, Despite Houston’s amazing defense, and multitude of weapons on offense, at some point TJ Yates will have to make a play and I just don’t feel like he’ll be able to.  If some how they can get out to an early lead and allow Arian Foster to run wild then they have a chance, but playing from behind?  No way.  Baltimore is too loaded to lose a game like this.  My Pick: Ravens 24 – Texans 13

Giants vs. Packers

This, for me, is the interesting game of the weekend.  I think the Giants have enough to beat the Packers in Lambeau.  Offensively, they have enough weapons to keep up with the high-octane Packers offense and defensively they can get after Rodgers, put pressure on him, and potentially force him into making mistakes.  Unfortunately for the Giants, Rodgers is pretty much unflappable.  He doesn’t make mistakes and… he gets rid of the ball faster than anyone with the exception of maybe Drew Brees.  What does that mean?  It means that the Giants vaunted pass rush will never get to him.  The ball will be gone before they get to him and their swiss cheese of a secondary will be torched.  It’ll be an interesting game none the less if only because these two teams played such a great game mid way through the season.  Regardless, this is the Packers game to lose… and I don’t think they will.  My Pick: Packers 35 – Giants 27
